MYLB Academy offers tutoring services in makeup, hair styling, bridal styling and wedding dress design.
MYLB Academy is headed and founded by Karen Swanston. Karen is fully trained in makeup artistry, styling and image consultancy, and has worked prominently in the bridal industry for many years. In addition, she has also run a wedding planning business. Karen’s love of fashion, bridal and design led her to seek further training in this field. However, although the wedding industry is extremely well established, Karen discovered that there was a gap in the market that wasn’t being catered for yet was being requested by brides, bridal boutique owners and wedding planners. There was therefore an opportunity to create a team that could deliver the services in demand and to provide extensive training courses to those who wish to pursue a career in the lucrative wedding industry, whether to run their own business or as part of the MYLB team.
Why Train with Us:
Our school is unique in that it is the only one of its kind in the UK that specialises solely in bridal & special occasion makeup, hair-styling and styling.
Most schools provide aftercare but we believe that ours is above and beyond. We want all our students to succeed and provide as much help as we can. From experience we are aware that some schools state that they provide aftercare but after the course has been completed the students rarely hear from the school again. The benefits would be that they received ongoing support and training. We seek out opportunities and jobs for our students but also have experience makeup artists, hairstylist and stylist on our agency books. On larger jobs we will arrange for our students to assist. We also provide photo shoots, industry talks and workshops so that our students are constantly updating their skills and keeping up to date with the latest trends. We provide mentoring support and opportunities to attend workshops, industry talks and photo shoots to build up that all important portfolio. We believe that everyone should receive a decent wage for their day’s work and above all a majority of the jobs we will offer will be paid. We will only consider unpaid work for our students if it would be greatly beneficial to their career.
- Q1) Is there an age limit to atttend the courses?
No, there is no upper age limit but students attending the training courses must be at least 18 years of age when the course starts.
- Q2) WHERE WILL THE TRAINING TAKE PLACE?
The training takes place in our studio. Classes start at 10am through to 4pm with an hour for lunch unless specified otherwise.
- Q3) DO I NEED ANY EXPERIENCE TO TAKE YOUR COURSES?
No. Our courses can be taken at any level. You can be a complete beginner wishing to change career or a professional wanting to gain more skills. Practice will be required once leaving the course, especially with the wedding dress design work, but we are here to help in any way we can and regularly hold practice days, workshops and photo shoots to enable you to gain confidence, polish up your skills and build your portfolio.
- Q4) WHERE CAN I GET FUNDING FOR THE COURSE?
There are a number of organisations that can assist students especially if the courses are to advance a career. Please note that we have no endorsement with any companies and these are only suggestions. We suggest looking up the following websites for advice:
- Q5) WILL I GET A CERTIFICATE AT THE END OF THE COURSE?
Yes we give certificates upon completion of all the courses.
- Q6) I LIVE OUTSIDE THE UK, CAN I STILL TAKE PART IN THE COURSES?
We welcome international students and you will be charged exactly the same as students from the UK. We would advise students that want to apply to have a good understanding of spoken English so that you can fully benefit from the course. Of course the student would be responsible for their visa and any other legal documentation required to study in the UK. We suggest looking at the following website for further advice and information: www.gov.uk/study-visit-visa.
- Q7) CAN YOU RECOMMEND ANYWHERE TO STAY?
When you book your course we will recommend local B& B’s and hotels in the area.
- Q8) I WORK FREELANCE, IF A JOB COMES IN AT SHORT NOTICE CAN I CHANGE THE DATE OF MY TRAINING?
We understand that job opportunities can come up at short notice and we will always try and accommodate this. If you let us know as soon as possible so that we are able to fill your space, then we will offer you an alternative date for training.
- Q9) CAN I GET A REFUND IF I CANCEL MY PLACE?
All payments are non-refundable except for exceptional circumstances (See Q10)
- Q10) WHAT HAPPENS IF MY COURSE IS CANCELLED?
Classes maybe cancelled due to extreme bad weather or emergencies beyond our control. Students will be informed via SMS and there will be an announcement on the website. If there are cancellations, then alternative dates will be arranged. If students cannot attend the alternative dates e.g. they are an international student and on a restricted timetable, then a refund for the remainder of the course will be provided. This is the only exception to the non-refund policy.
- Q11) WHAT GUARANTEE DO I HAVE OF A SUCCESSFUL CAREER AND CAN YOU GUARANTEE ME JOBS?
We cannot guarantee that a student would be successful. Only your talent, determination and perseverance can guarantee your success. But we do want all our students to succeed and make every effort to guide you. Our aim is to be one of the top bridal and special occasion agencies not only in the UK but internationally, but we cannot guarantee jobs for everyone.
- Q12) WHAT JOBS CAN I EXPECT?
We provide a wide variety of services, from bridal makeup and hairstyling to master-classes and make up lessons. In addition, we also work on photo shoots, look books, fashion shows and videos to name but a few.
- Q13) WILL I HAVE TO WORK FOR FREE?
We will only recommend unpaid placements to our students if it would be greatly beneficial to their career. Most schools provide work experience which is unpaid or low paid. We believe that everyone should be paid a decent wage for their work. When starting out it is the norm to work on a TFP basis with photographers to build the portfolio. The downside to this would be that you can get inexperienced photographers, un-photogenic models and a possibility that you may never see any images. This is why we provide the opportunity and encourage students to attend our photo shoots. Whilst there is a fee you can be guaranteed professional images from a professional photographer and an agency model. Long term you can see this as an investment in your career. With bridal there are of course some clients that expect a full service for little money. Normally this is because they have blown the budget and there is very little left to pay for hair and makeup. Our prices are set and we do not discount but we do provide the client with various packages that will suit most budgets.
